wave premiering at Bolton put big light on festival
Commissioned by Things That Go On Things for Bolton Put Big Light On Festival, this innovative, interactive installation was co-created with artist Alicja Mrozowska as part of creative partnership are you playing out.
A fluid conversation between light, sound, painting and movement, Wave is an immersive, interactive installation exploring how painting, projection, movement and sound can enter into a living, responsive conversation with each other and with the audience.
The work centres around a long curvilinear structure, which acts simultaneously as sculptural form, projection surface and painted object. Projection mapping animates the paper’s surface with responsive visuals, subtly shifting in rhythm with an original sound composition. The audio comprised of layered instrumental elements and field recordings gathered from Bolton’s urban and natural environments; local textures embedded into the sensory experience.
The audience is invited to move around and engage not only visually but physically, exploring the structure, casting shadows, changing perspectives and becoming part of the unfolding dialogue.
The piece utilised two banks of hand activated infrared sensors (ten sensors in total) that detect movement and proximity, dynamically altering both the projected imagery and layered sound in real-time. The result is a work that listens, responds, and evolves through its environment and its viewers.
Each evening also feature two live performances by the artists, incorporating painting and an improvised audiovisual creation. Projection mapping and live sound responded intuitively to the act of painting, merging digital and analogue gestures in a flowing creative conversation.
The work blurs boundaries between mediums, allowing painting to speak through motion, sound to inhabit space physically, and projection to become painterly in form.
These sound walk tracks played on a loop, with each one separately controllable via infra-red sensors, which allowed audience members to fade the sounds in to mix with the ambient track “Wave”.
